Oelrichs Elementary School
Oelrichs Elementary School had long envisioned a safe, engaging, and inclusive playground where students could play, explore, and grow. For years, the school community recognized the need for a refreshed space that would inspire active play and create lasting memories. After thoughtful planning, design, and the dedication of everyone involved, the dream has come to life.
Now, Oelrichs students have a vibrant and carefully designed playground that will serve as a joyful gathering spot for years to come, encouraging physical activity, social interaction, and endless fun!
Fifth-grader Naomi Phelps-Herman came up with the idea to have a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new playground. Naomi wrote a letter to Principal Darla Peterson sharing her idea. She even included a drawing of the new playground with "all the kids," Principal Peterson with her glasses in her hands, and Dr. Stone carrying his coffee cup.
Principal Peterson believed it was a great idea. With the help of Activities Director Terri Lemmon, they made Naomi's idea a reality. The kids could hardly contain their excitement while Naomi cut the blue ribbon. As soon as their teachers told them they could play, the kids covered every surface of the playground trying out the new activities.
Many loads of wood chips were added to create a soft place to land, which the little ones appreciated after they flew down the slides and landed on the ground. The side-by-side slides were popular; friends held hands and supported each other while they slid together. The kids made their way across stepping stones and up ladders.
School Board President John Cope shared he is pleased with the quality of construction and materials. He believes the equipment will provide many years of enjoyment for the children.
